Organized by the Mayor’s Office and Christopher Hawthorne, the Chief Design Officer for the City of Los Angeles, the Low-Rise Housing Ideas competition has come to a close with the announcement of 12 winners.
The concept behind the competition was to promote housing affordability, new paths to homeownership and innovative models of sustainable residential architecture. Winners were selected in four categories: Subdivisions, Corners, Fourplex and (Re)Distribution. According to NBCLA, the 12 winners were chosen from a total of 380 submissions by a panel of leading architects and experts in urban planning and affordable housing.
The first place finishers include Vonn Weisenberger (New York), Omgivning and Studio-MLA(Los Angeles), Arts and Creatives Designs Ltd (United Kingdom) and Green Alley Housing (Los Angeles).
Seven of the 12 winning teams were local to Southern California.
The four first-place winners will receive $10,000, second-place winners will receive $3,500 and third-place winners will receive $1,500. Per NBCLA, the city sees the designs as a way to offer an achievable vision for Los Angeles to add additional housing in single-family and low-rise neighborhoods, which make up 80 percent of L.A. residential land.
