An iconic, albeit shuttered, piece of the Valley will soon be no more. In a 13-1 vote with no discussion, the L.A. City Council has approved a new Studio City project that will include demolishing the Sportsmen’s Lodge.
In it’s place, the mixed-use new build will include 520 apartment units, including 78 for very-low income tenants; as well as 45,000 square feet of commercial space.
“We are excited that the Los Angeles City Council has approved our plans. This new development will provide much-needed housing, including 78 affordable housing residences. We are looking forward to delivering this mixed-use offering to the community,” Jeff Dvorett, president of Midwood Investment & Development, the developer, said in a statement.
The famed hotel was at one time popular with old Hollywood. It was also significant to the local labor movement, so much so that UNITE HERE Local 11, a union representing hospitality workers, sought to stop the hotel from being demolished, citing it as one of the first in the area to employ unionized workers.
According to the L.A. Daily News, City Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez, who was an organizer with UNITE HERE before entering politics, cast the lone dissenting vote from the council.
