Sure, the house may have a famous name behind its design and an infamous name behind the seller, but it looks like Kanye West is having a hard time selling his unfinished Malibu home. The rapper listed the Tadao Ando-designed home for $53 million back in December (already below what paid back in 2021)—and now West has lowered the asking price to $39 million.
The 4,000 square-foot house needs windows and doors, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and interior finishes. The four bedroom/four-and-a-half bath residence spans three levels and backs right up to the beach. Quite visually stark, the structure reportedly required 1,200 tons of poured concrete, 200 tons of steel reinforcement and 12 pylons driven 60 feet into the ground, supporting the heavy house from sinking into the sand.
The controversial rapper and fashion mogul spent $57.3 million in an off-market deal for the home in 2021. (An earlier listing marketed the home for $75 million before being removed from the market and sold to West).
By all accounts, it seems unlikely that West ever lived in the property.
The Wall Street Journal previously noted that last Fall, West was sued by a contractor who worked on the mansion and was also a live-in caretaker. The contractor alleged he was forced to work 16 hours a day and sleep on the floor near open insulation, according to court documents.
The contractor claimed he was fired when he refused to rip out the home’s electrical system and replace the wiring with large generators, which he felt would be a fire hazard. West denied the allegations.
Jason Oppenheim holds the listing.
