Allied Van Lines, one of the largest relocation companies in the moving industry, is out with its 2023 Migration Report, which found interstate moves were on the decline once again last year. Following the 20 percent decrease in 2022 compared, there was a further 12 percent decline in 2023.
Allied found that South Carolina, Arizona and Tennessee were the top inbound states last year, while residents left Illinois, California and Pennsylvania at the highest rates. Two California hot spots made the list of top outbound locations, with San Diego coming in at no. 1 and L.A. at no. 5.
While the preference for states like South Carolina and Arizona continues, driven by their lower cost of living and better job opportunities, high outbound rates from California suggest ongoing challenges related to living costs and economic factors.
“The exodus from California, including the relocation of companies like Oracle, Tesla, and Vrbo, can be linked to its high cost of living, stringent regulatory environment, and high taxes,” the report states. “Despite its strong economy and innovation hubs, these factors have compelled individuals and businesses to relocate.”
