California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced another round of funding for Project Homekey, aimed at expand availability of housing for individuals and families experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. Following $75 million in grants last month, the state has awarded another $151 million to L.A. County projects per a December 20 announcement.
The money will support seven different L.A.-area projects, creating more than 500 residential units. The projects include converting a Palmdale hotel into permanent supportive housing; converting a Carson motel into 107 apartments; building acquisitions in East L.A. and Lancaster; and converting existing apartment buildings into supportive housing in L.A.
Los Angeles County has used Homekey to acquire 31 properties to date—mostly hotels and motels—for conversion into interim and permanent housing for people experiencing homelessness, totaling more than 2,129 units total, so far.
