A drive-in theater meets electric vehicle hub could be the plot line for a Back To The Future sequel, but it’s also the plan for a popular corner of Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. Construction is underway for what is being dubbed the Tesla diner, combining an old-school diner and charging facility, located on the former site of a Shakey’s restaurant at 7001 W. Santa Monica Boulevard.
According to Urbanize, the new building has plans for a 30-car surface parking lot, each spot with its own charging station. Stantec is designing the restaurant, with renderings depicting a futuristic two-story building with rooftop seating. Building permits also indicate plans for a screen in the parking lot, allowing the site to double as a drive-in theater.
If successful, Tesla reportedly plans to expand the diner format in other cities across the country. No word on a proposed opening date for the L.A. location.
