L.A. County’s Department of Health Services is getting a big boost in its effort to fix Skid Row to the tune of $60 million. The L.A. Times is reporting that the department has been awarded the Encampment Resolution Fund grant from the California Interagency Council on Homelessness.
That $60 million will be put toward what is being called the Skid Row Action Plan, a $280-million initiative aimed strengthening the notorious neighborhood and support those experiencing homelessness. The plan includes providing interim housing and services for more than half of Skid Row’s homeless population over the next three years.
The L.A. Times notes that the county is contributing $125 million toward the larger effort, while the city is adding $40 million. An additional $55 million in vouchers is expected to be leveraged from public housing authorities, according to a county statement.
The multi-layered plan calls for increasing permanent housing opportunities as well as interim housing, additional services, 24/7 urgent care services and additional sanitation services in the neighborhood.
