Some 10,000 acres of land in Northern California is set to hit the market after the Santa Clara City Council voted to sell off Loyalton Ranch. But buyer beware: 90 percent of the land was burned in a wildfire.
The Real Deal reports that the city council voted 4-3 to sell the property, despite Mayor Lisa Gillmor’s dissent. Gillmor reportedly said that the city shouldn’t put it on the market so soon after the fire.
The city paid $1.6 million for the Loyalton Ranch in 1977. The property was was appraised at $4.1 million in May 2020, far less than the $10 million that the city could have gotten by selling it years ago, according to Gillmor.
The the Mercury News reports that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is interested in buying the ranch and adding to the nearby Hallelujah Junction Wildlife Area.
