MAD Architects, a Chinese architecture firm known for daring designs, has submitted an application with the City of Los Angeles to build a $500-million high-rise on Sunset Boulevard called “the Star.”
The 22-story glass-skinned office tower would include sky gardens on the 10th and 17th floors, a rooftop restaurant and a funicular tram traveling up and down the sides of the tower, according to the L.A. Times.
The Star’s design was inspired by the curves of existing local landmarks including the Griffith Observatory, Capitol Records building, Hollywood Bowl and Cinerama Dome, all neighboring the proposed site on Sunset Boulevard near Gower.
Per the L.A. Times, the developers envision the 500,000-square-foot building being rented to an entertainment industry power player like Netflix, who currently occupies a large portion of commercial real estate in the neighborhood, including in some of the existing buildings on the potential site for the Star.
The proposed designs must be approved by the city and would require a general plan amendment and changes to the area zoning.
