Will the gubernatorial recall election hanging in the not-too-distant future, Gov. Gavin Newsom has two major decisions to make regarding housing and development in California.
Two bills have just landed on Newsom’s desk that aim to boost density in areas zoned for single-family housing.
SB 9 would allow property owners to subdivide their single-family lots to construct two duplexes or two houses with attached units. The bill would allow for up to four units on a single-family lot as long as the property owner agrees to live in one of the units for three years, according to the L.A. Business Journal.
Additionally, SB 10 would give cities the option to upzone infill sites and areas near transit centers, up to 10 residential units on qualifying lots, as noted by the L.A. Business Journal.
“The Governor appreciates the Senate’s hard work to craft and pass a housing package, and especially acknowledges Pro Tem Atkins’ long history of housing leadership,” Newsom’s office said in its statement. “He looks forward to reviewing both SB 9 and 10 when they reach his desk. Our housing crisis is decades in the making and will take an all-hands approach to fix.”
Beyond that, Newsom’s office declined to say whether he will sign the bills. He has 12 days to sign or veto the bills.
