U.S. News & World Report has released it’s annual list of the best cities to live in, and California, by and large, didn’t have a strong showing.
Analyzing the 150 most populous metro areas, the outlet looked at local job markets, quality of life rankings and general desirability for each of the cities.
Coming in at the top spot for the second year in a row was Boulder, Colorado, with an overall score of 7.6 out of 10. In large part, Boulder’s job market was a big draw, with a booming technology sector and reputation as a haven for startups. Additionally, lower cost of living helped keep it at No. 1.
Rounding out the top 5 are:
Raleigh & Durham, North Carolina
Huntsville, Alabama
Fayetteville, Arkansas
Austin, Texas
San Francisco came in at No. 15, the highest ranking for any California city. Other Golden State mentions include San Jose (No. 36), San Diego (No. 97), Sacramento (No. 98), Santa Barbara (No. 115), Santa Rosa (No. 121), Los Angeles (No. 126), Vallejo/Fairfield (No. 135), Fresno (No. 136), Salinas (No. 141), Modesto (No. 146), Stockton (No. 147), Bakersfield (No. 148) and Visalia (No. 149).
