For a city that seemingly is always under construction, L.A. residents and visitors should be prepared for even more ground breaking.
According to Urbanize, the Department of Building and Safety issued 40,888 building permits between April 1 and June 30 of this year—a 15 percent increase from the same period last year. The total valuation of said permits is an estimated $1.5 billion, up from $1.3 billion last year.
It’s welcome news for the construction industry, which saw significant impact during the 2020 shutdown, and for developers and perspective homeowners alike. While building material costs continue to rise, and, to a degree, sway public opinion, the increase in the number of permits is generally a good sign for the city’s recovery.
Urbanize points out that plan checks and inspections were also up last quarter, indicating that industry confidence is high for in-progress and future projects.
