Access to the great outdoors is often a top driver when it comes to decisions around moving. And after more than a year where most were encouraged to stay indoors, we could all use some fresh air and space to roam.
With that in mind, InMyArea.com has released it’s 2021 rankings of the most outdoor-friendly states in the U.S.—and the west is showing up strong!
Using the availability of outdoor spaces and robustness of the recreational industry in each of the 50 states, IMA also included data on waste and pollution management to better quantify the quality of existing outdoor spaces.
With a high score of 91 out of 100, IMA found the most outdoor-friendly state to be Oregon. In addition to a laundry list of outdoor activities offered throughout the state, including hiking, snow sports, biking and boating, state officials have made conservation a top priority. Efforts are underway to improve water quality, air quality, and wildlife habitats, while IMA notes that local authorities also have a firm grip on limiting pollution, encouraging renewable energy and dealing with waste.
California came in at #7 on this year’s list, with a total score of 82 out of 100. The Golden State sits at #4 when it comes to state’s with the best outdoor recreational opportunities.
The complete Top 10 includes:
- Oregon
- Montana
- Wyoming
- Washington
- Colorado
- Utah
- California
- Idaho
- Alaska
- Nevada
Texas has the dubious honor of landing in last place, with a overall score of 27 out of 100. According to the 2020 BEA report, Texas is one of the top five states where outdoor recreation accounts for the largest percentage of total U.S. GDP. However, this economic factor doesn’t make up for the state’s toxic chemical problems and relatively small proportion of protected land dedicated to outdoor recreation.
