If you’re thinking of a family move in the not-too-distant future, consider consulting WalletHub’s 2021 Best & Worst Place to Raise A Family list.
WalletHub compared more than 180 U.S. cities based on 48 key metrics that consider essential family dynamics, such as the cost of housing, the quality of local school and health-care systems, and the opportunities for fun and recreation. Coming in at #1 with a total score of 72.48 was Overland Park, Kansas. But for those looking to the Golden State, there are plenty of viable options!
Coming in at #2 and #3, respectively, are Fremont and Irvine. SoCal staples Huntington Beach and San Diego also landed high at #12 and #13, followed by San Jose at #14.
Elsewhere in the top 50 are San Francisco (#17), Santa Clarita (#31), Rancho Cucamonga (#32), Santa Rose (#37) and Sacramento (#43).
Looking at playgrounds per capita, walkability and bikeability, number of attractions, the general population share of families with young children, school systems and general affordability, some California cities did not exactly shine on the list.
San Bernardino came in at #175 with an overall score of 39.83—the lowest of California markets. Elsewhere on the less family friendly end were Stockton (#144), Oakland (#134) and Santa Ana (#133).
