As state and numerous local eviction moratoriums ended on Sept. 30, some residential and commercial tenants have been left in financial limbo. What protections are still in place and how do those in need get access?
The L.A. County Board of Supervisors have stepped in to help further the economic rebound and have granted a new eviction ban for commercial tenants. According to the L.A. Business Journal, the new protections—in place through January—mean that landlords cannot evict business tenants for not paying rent, no-fault reasons, nuisance, denying entry to a landlord, or unauthorized occupants or pets, so long as the violations are related to COVID-19.
Commercial tenants must notify their landlords if they are unable to pay rent within seven days after it’s due. Additionally, tenants with between 10 and 100 employees need to provide written documentation of financial hardship due to COVID.
According to the County of Los Angeles, the following cities have enacted their own residential eviction protections (updates available here):
Baldwin Park
Beverly Hills
City of Los Angeles
Lynwood
Manhattan Beach
Maywood
