Competition for vacation rentals in the heavy tourist area of Lake Tahoe is about to get tighter thanks to an impending new ordinance passed unanimously by county supervisors.
According to the S.F. Chronicle, earlier this month, Placer County Supervisors approved and adopted a new short-term rental ordinance, which will cap the number of short-term rentals at 3,900, about 25 percent of housing stock in the North Lake Tahoe area.
The ordinance, which goes into effect in March, will also require more regular inspections and impose stricter rules around noise, parking and trash collection. The ordinance will also raise penalty fines to $1,500 for a first violation, $3,000 for a second and $5,000 for a third.
City officials in neighboring Truckee are also said to be considering similar short-term rental ordinances as the NorCal area continues to be popular vacation destination.
