As the search and rescue efforts continue at the Champlain Towers South condo building following last week’s devastating collapse, more and more reports continue to come to light, pointing to structural deficits throughout the 40-year-old building.
The Miami Herald has just reported that two days before the collapse, a pool contractor noted (and photographed) damage in the building’s garage—including standing water, cracked concrete and severely corroded rebar under the pool. The story also notes that in a 2018 inspection report, engineer Frank Morabito had flagged a “major error” in the original design that was allowing water intrusion and causing damage to the structural concrete slabs.
The New York Times is also reporting that the president of the condo building warned residents that the damage in the building had “gotten significantly worse” since it was highlighted in the 2018 inspection.
