Long Beach could be getting a major boost in affordable housing units thanks to a proposed partnership with L.A.-based Skid Row Housing Trust. The developer and city officials have submitted plans for a large project, Union, to cover the blocks surrounding the A Line’s Anaheim Street Station.
According to Urbanize, Union would sit on the empty acre at the intersection of 14th Street and Long Beach Boulevard. The seven-story building complex—designed by City Fabrick— will be home to 160 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, designated as affordable housing at the low-, very low-, and extremely low-income levels. Below the housing will also be 4,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space.
Under an agreement approved last month by the Long Beach City Council, Union will seek financing from California’s Department of Housing and Community Development, with an ask of $30 million through the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Community Program. The potential state funding would supplement $3 million already allocated to the project by the City of Long Beach.
Reports place the total cost for the Union build at $91.2 million.
Urbanize notes that should the application for funding be approved, the state would issue $20 million in construction financing for the project, as well as $10 million for transportation and infrastructure projects in the surrounding community.
