The people have spoken, and they want a new name. The Gerald Desmond Replacement Bridge will likely become the Long Beach International Gateway after voters in a survey selected the name over two other options, according to the Grunion.
The bridge, was opened in October, replaced the Gerald Desmond Bridge, which was too low to serve larger cargo ships. The other name options were International Gateway and Long Beach Transpacific.
The Long Beach International Gateway bridge is the largest structure in Long Beach, casting a shadow over the original Gerald Desmond Bridge, which served the country’s second-largest port for 52 years. Various new outlets report the final cost of the new bridge to total $1.46 billion.
Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell and state Sen. Lena Gonzalez, both local representatives for the area, have introduced a bill in the state legislature to officially name the bridge. The timeline for approval has not been determined.
