As U.S. Census Bureau officials were analyzing their most recent data set, a trend apparently began to emerge: the anecdotal evidence of big city residents moving out to the burbs was indeed happening. And it wasn’t just related to the pandemic.
In fact, the top 10 fastest-growing cities in the U.S. are now all suburbs neighboring major metro areas. And, as reported by the Today show, they’re all in the South and West.
According to the Census Bureau, all 10 of the fastest-growing cities grew by at least 44 percent, and the fastest-growing one, Buckeye, Arizona, a western suburb of Phoenix, was up nearly 80 percent this decade to reach more than 91,000 residents.
The only SoCal city to make the top 10 was Irvine. The city’s population growth increased by 45 percent between 2010-2020—the largest growth in California. Irvine’s population went from 212,375 in 2010 to 307,670 in 2020.
