Safety and security has become a driving issue in the upcoming midterm elections, be it personal or financial. WalletHub compared more than 180 cities across 42 key indicators of safety, including the percentage of residents who are fully vaccinated and assaults per capita to the unemployment rate and road quality.
Fremont, in Northern California, was the safest city in California to crack the top 20, coming in at no. 17. With a total score of 79.98 (out of 100), the Bay Area neighborhood got high marks for financial safety and home/community safety.
Irvine was the top SoCal spot, coming in at no. 26. Unfortunately, from there, it isn’t great news for the Golden State.
San Bernardino comes in near the bottom of the list at no. 180, with a score of 54.41. Three areas where the city received low marks include neighborhood safety, natural disaster risk and financial safety.
Oakland was a hair better at no. 175 and a score of 60.45. Just above, Los Angeles came in at no. 172 and a score of 60.75. Also among the “least safe” category, Stockton, Long Beach and San Francisco.
The ranking found that Columbia, Maryland, Nashua, New Hampshire and Laredo, Texas were the safest cities in the U.S.
