New Census data reveals that California saw the largest out-migration of any state in the U.S. for the year ending July 1, 2021. Some 367,299 residents moved out of the Golden State, followed closely by New York, with 352,185 out-migrants and Illinois, with a loss of 122,460.
Factoring in international migration, births and deaths, California’s total population loss for the year period ending July 1, 2021, was 261,902—down to 39,237,836, according to the Census data.
For those following real estate hot spots, the three states with the largest increases in population should be no surprise: Florida, Texas and Arizona.
Florida saw 220,890 people move in over the 12-month time period, followed by Texas with 170,307 and Arizona with 93,026.
The South was the only region in the country to gain from net domestic migration between 2020-2021, adding 657,682 residents.
