Now affording the longest moratorium period on record in the country, New York has announced the state’s eviction ban will remain in effect until Jan. 15, 2022, according to CNBC.
In addition to New York, Illinois has banned evictions until Sept. 19, while California’s moratorium ends on Sept. 30. New Jersey and Washington, D.C., have eviction bans on the books until unspecified dates in January as well. New Mexico also currently has an eviction moratorium in place, but no expiration date has been formally announced.
All of the local protections, of course, follow last month’s Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the national moratorium.
“Six-and-a-half million households are behind on rent and at heightened risk of eviction,” Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, told CNBC. “That number has barely budged since March, which tells us all we need to know about the unacceptably slow pace of spending by many states and cities.”
While Congress has allocated more than $45 billion in rent relief funds for renters and landlords, only 16 states have reportedly spent less than 5 percent of their share.
