Yesterday, the Los Angeles City Council voted to require that all covenanted affordable units in the city must be listed on the website lahousing.lacity.org, as well as the on leasing website for any relevant projects. Urbanize reports that the Council’s instructions to the Housing Department and City Attorney also require an open application process for the new units.
Up until now, projects built with private funds that had affordable housing units had not been subject to public posting requirements. Income-restricted units financed by the city have to be posted publicly when available.
The rule change is is aimed at making it easier to find available units in one central master list. Urbanize notes that the new requirement is, in part, motivated by incentive programs such as the city’s Transit Oriented Communities guidelines (TOC) and the statewide density bonus, which together have helped create mire than 14,000 affordable housing units.
