L.A.’s commercial real estate availability unfortunately saw an increase with the announcement that ArcLight Cinemas will not reopen following it’s COVID closure.
“After shutting our doors more than a year ago, today we must share the difficult and sad news that Pacific will not be reopening its ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres locations,” the company said in a statement. “This was not the outcome anyone wanted, but despite a huge effort that exhausted all potential options, the company does not have a viable way forward.”
Several theaters across Souther California are included in this closure, including the famous Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. Actors and directors alike have been expressing their disappointment over the news on social media, with Mindy Kaling hoping it’s all a bad PR stunt:
“I am cynical,” she tweeted. “I feel like the arclight’s not really gone and some corporation has already bought it and this is part of a strategy to cause mourning and then they swoop in and save it and we love them and forget they’re a corporation. I mean, that’s how I would do it and I’m evil.”
ArcLight had 11 locations, largely throughout Los Angeles but also included properties in San Diego, Chicago, Boston and Washington. The shuttering of ArcLight and Pacific Theatres, owned by L.A.-based Decurion Corp., is among the largest entertainment industry closures of the pandemic.
