After an exhaustive search and design competition, the city of Los Angeles selected Michael Maltzan Architecture and design firm HNTB and their “Ribbon of Light” concept to replace the old Sixth Street Viaduct.
Once the largest and longest of all the bridges in L.A., the new “Ribbon of Light” bridge will feature 10 sets of arches ranging 30- to 60 feet. The car-, bike-, pedestrian-friendly landmark will also light up for celebrations and events.
“Nothing is like this. We’ve never seen anything like this. Im very excited to see all this come together,” City Engineer Gary Lee Moore told ABC7, who checked in for a progress update on the massive project. “I hope there’s a lot of Dodger blue shining, a lot of Laker purple and gold, Kings black and white. Were just really excited to celebrate this with the community during the day and the night.”
Once completed, the Bureau of Engineering will begin construction on the new 12-acre Sixth Street Parc, which will rest at the base of the bridge. It will feature sports courts, a dog park, adult fitness areas, playgrounds and splash pads, a skate park, picnic and garden areas, and an amphitheater.
